Health Canada warns of more websites selling harmful 'miracle' cure

Postmedia News February 24, 2012

The federal government on Friday warned of two more websites selling what it says is a dangerous substance under the guise of a "miracle" cure for ailments such as diabetes and cancer.

Health Canada said two websites — www.miracle-mineral-supplement.com and www.mms1.ca — were selling a substance known as MMS. The acronym stands for Miracle Mineral Solution or Miracle Mineral Supplement.

As of Friday afternoon, the latter website was not operational, but the former was still up and running.

The government says the products sold as MMS contain sodium chlorite, which is used as a germicide by veterinarians and as a hard-surface disinfectant.

Friday's warning comes about a week after another website, www.themmsstore.com, run by Calgary's Stan Nowak, was shut down.

"Health Canada has notified distributors identified to date that the sale of sodium chlorite for human consumption is in contravention of the Food and Drugs Act," the department said in a statement. "We have also requested that identified distributors remove product from the Canadian market."

Health Canada says ingestion of the product has been associated with three adverse reactions in Canada, including one that was life-threatening.
