Roadwork on Third wraps up but issue still there Empty Roadwork on Third wraps up but issue still there

Traffic is back to normal on Third Avenue following close to a week of interruptions and inconveniences to drivers in the Alberni Valley.
The traffic slow-down was the result of a crew in the area making repairs to the city's main sewer line below the road at the end of Redford Street on Third Avenue.
This is the fifth leak in the line, and it may not be the last. It is a problem that could continue, at a cost of up to $20,000 per repair, unless the city approves a budget request of $250,000 to fix the problem for good.

City engineer Guy Cicon said the 220 metre section needs to be replaced, and until that happens more leaks could occur.
"It does demonstrate a deterioration of our underground infrastructure," Cicon said. "It's failing and we need to allocate more funds to replace it."
Although the road is open, Cicon warns it will still be rough for a few months. Because of the cold weather, the hot-mix asphalt plant is not running. That means city crews will repair it using cold-mix asphalt. Because the cold method is not as good, city crews will keep patching the section until they can pave it in lateMarch or early April.
